Friday, 27 March 2015

Found this piece of honeycomb on the ground

This is one pheasent egg that wont be laid!!

Thursday, 26 March 2015

The 'chaffinch' nest of yesterday turned out in fact to be a blackbird nest with 4 eggs! (I didn't have a very close look at it!) Also found another blackbird nest with 2 eggs, and 1 egg now in blackbird nest pictured on 20/3/15.

Wednesday, 25 March 2015

Found a blackbird nest with female sat on 4 eggs, and a chaffinch nest in some laurel (contents unknown - may still be in construction.)

Also a mysterious fungal (?) growth on a bit of dead bramble stem:

2 eggs now in a blackbird nest found a few days ago:

Monday, 23 March 2015

Found a song thrush nest with 2 eggs, and 2 blackbird eggs in one of the nests found previously - first active blackbird nest this year.

Saw 3 angry buzzards fighting and making a lot of noise in and around the wood. Holding the perimeter of a breeding territory must be increasingly difficult nowadays!

Sunday, 22 March 2015

Found another long-tailed tit nest about half-built in the hedge on the edge of the wood:

Looks like some of my 'thrush nests' may in fact be old nests from last year, but its hard to be sure. Saw a bird sitting in one today so that one's obviously new!

Wych elm starting to flower:

Saturday, 21 March 2015

Found another 7 (I think - I'm losing count tbh!) possible thrush nests today, including one song thrush nest with an egg (see photo) a few yards away from the 'early stage' nest pictured yesterday - which in fact was just a few random twigs!

A few (dog?) violets in flower

Daffodils nearly fully out now

Lots of redwings in the wood for the last few days.

Friday, 20 March 2015

Spring has really burst into life in the last couple of days. Found another 5 probable song thrush/blackbird nests in various stages of construction, including these 2 pictured:
Blackbird nest I think

Early stage of song thrush nest (or maybe just a few random twigs!)

And a song thrush nest found yesterday now contains first egg of 2015! I saw her on the nest this morning - she was obviously laying!
Saw my first (British) chiffchaff of 2015 and a male LESSER SPOTTED WOODPECKER in the middle of the wood getting bothered by a nuthatch.

Saw a pair of nuthatches investigating a nest hole.

Flushed a pair of mandarin ducks from the stream.

Lots of buzzards performing aerobatics in the area - there are so many nowadays its impossible to know whats going on regarding pairs and territories! At this rate they will have about half an acre per pair!

Thursday, 19 March 2015

Found 5 probable song thrush/blackbird nests in the wood today, all either in construction or completed but empty, most of them in holly.

Briefly heard a LESSER SPOTTED WOOPECKER calling near the stream.

Flushed a woodcock by the stream.

Heard my first couple of chiffchaffs singing in the wood this year.

Wednesday, 18 March 2015

A lot of territorial GSW activity in the wood today.

Tuesday, 17 March 2015

A lot more spring-like today after some cold grey days. Saw a sparrowhawk and a peregrine above the wood and a buzzard display swooping. Noticed a few sticks high up in an oak tree on the edge of the wood which might be the foundations of a buzzard nest. Hazel starting to leaf.

Sunday, 15 March 2015

Sunday, 8 March 2015

First wood anemones coming out and found a green hellebore near the edge of the wood.

Saturday, 7 March 2015

Found a long-tailed tit nest in construction in brambles. Noticed they appeared to be nestbuilding in the area a couple of weeks or so ago.

Saw first bumblebee of spring in the wood.

Wednesday, 4 March 2015

A few daffodils out now and a primrose.

Saw a great tit doing a very good impression of a nuthatch call. No sign of tawny owls nesting in the boxes - a pair were flying about and calling in the wood this evening.
